The one thing you can do to dramatically improve your success (for weight-loss & building muscle)

In a minute, I’ll give you a sneak peek into the most important part of one of my big goals this year.  It’s something that’s almost embarrassing to share with tens of thousands of people.  And I haven’t shared it with anyone.

But I realized something yesterday…

Yep.. I messed up.  I think we need to take a step BACK.

Doh

The last few weeks we’ve talked about ditching New Years Resolutions in favor of Goals [you can catch up here, if you missed it].

And we got a ton of great questions about how to help achieve those goals.

In fact, we’ll be writing up detailed blog posts on a few of them that are too in-depth to answer in a quick email.

There was a problem with all of that though.

The problem is, I forgot one GIANT thing. Something I know better than to leave out, because it is absolutely crucial in my personal goal setting every year.  In fact, it’s also crucial in how I raise my family, how I operate my business, and live my life as a follower of Christ.

And I can sum it up in one word.

WHY?

What’s your key motivation?
What’s your purpose behind this goal?
What’s at stake if you don’t achieve it?
What’s at stake if you DO achieve it?

What would be measurably different in your life tomorrow morning if you woke up and you had exactly what you wanted?

It’s about really digging in deep, and being authentic and even vulnerable with yourself so you can find your #1 Why.

I almost didn’t send this next part…

But then I realized, I have to be vulnerable first, in order for others to follow suit, so they can take the next step towards achieving their biggest goals this year.

But before I reveal some of my WHYs, let me give the 30 second back story first:

Almost 6 years ago now…
[just to show, if you don’t fix your problems NOW, half a decade will fly by before you know it]
I injured myself deadlifting [basically picking up a bar off the ground that’s loaded with weights on each side if your’e not familiar with this lift].

They were these awkward plates that aren’t evenly round circles, so they twist a bit when you’re lifting.  And when they hit the ground, you never know if it’ll be the low point, or the high point.

The bar hit the floor, everything bounced all wonky.  Next thing you know, I’ve torn multiple muscles, in my back, neck, dislocated disks and have a neck that convulses and locks up when I turn left. (I’m no longer an ambiturner)

Long story short, fitness has been very challenging the past 5 years, but more importantly I let my injury become an excuse.  An excuse that lasted several years too long.

But if I once was in great shape and know how to get there, have access to the best supplements in the world, and have spent almost 15 years learning about diet, nutrition, training and everything fitness… why couldn’t I get my injury fixed and get back to where I once was?

It’s simple.  I didn’t have a strong enough WHY to push through the messy middle.

You must know your WHY to improve your odds at success (in anything)

 

I didn’t have a true, authentic and deep enough conviction that mattered to me, and that I connected with.  One to push through the struggles, to get up early before the kids were awake, to pivot and make a new plan every time my preferred style of workouts aggravated my injuries.  Or to just get it done, even when work and life were busy.

And you’ll need one [or more] too, because no great goal will come easy.  It will get challenging, and if your WHY isn’t big enough, you’ll quit.  You WILL hit a wall.

We’re already a few days into February.

I’ll start off being a little more vulnerable than I feel comfortable being in front of thousands of people. But to be honest, that uncomfortable feeling was what queued me in to knowing it was the exact thing I needed to do.

When you start to feel uncomfortable with actions in your goals, it typically means they’re big enough and important enough to truly matter.  You’re headed in the right direction.

So push through that fear and take action, before it has a chance to cripple you and stunt your growth. [Can you tell my theme for 2016 is Massive Action? ;-) ]

Now I want you to take a moment, go back to your #1 fitness goal for the year and write your biggest, most meaningful WHY behind this goal.

2016 Resolutions: ARE YOU PART OF THE 25%?

I absolutely love planning, brainstorming, setting goals and all that awesome nerdy stuff.  So this time of the year is a blast and something I always look forward to.  It’s such a great time to start off fresh, and motivated to take on the world.

Everyone is setting resolutions and fired up to accomplish them. And Instagram is doubly full of gym-selfies.

It’s a beautiful thing.

Except….

It’s just over a week into 2016, and while over 150 million Americans usually make resolutions, 25% of us have already quit.

That, is tragic.

What’s worse?  Only about 8% of people actually say they accomplish their resolution according to Forbes magazine.

The majority of people are FAILING.

[if you think that’s you, don’t worry, I have a simple solution to help, below]

Not failing and trying again with a new approach, that’s called a test, and that’s okay.

But people are quitting, only a week in.

And what are they missing out on accomplishing and changing in their lives this year? What could you be missing out on?

Here are the top 5 Resolutions for 2016:

#1 Lose Weight
#2 Getting Organized
#3 Spend Less, Save More
#4 Enjoy Life to the Fullest
#5 Staying Fit and Healthy

And overall, 66% of people have a fitness related resolution. Can you see why this really matters to us?  Our mission is to see you Transform, so these quitting numbers are painful, scary even.  I want us all to strive together to make sure Bakersfield is different.

So what’s wrong here? What’s the difference between those 8% who succeed, and the 92% who don’t?

Can we increase our odds at success? Create real progress?

You betchya.

“Even if I already gave up on my resolution, or messed up?”

The answer is “YES!

Now, this could be an entire book, or online course, just to help you succeed and make real progress  [In fact, I personally go through a goal setting course online every year]….

…but I think we can distill it into a few, simple, actionable tasks and make some MASSIVE improvements in your ability to end 2016 saying “I finally did it, I accomplished real goals that matter, the ones I set for myself, and I feel incredible!”.

Accomplish those things that really matter to you, to your family, and to your health.

Wether you want to drop 20 pounds, or build 15 pounds of lean muscle, or take more vacation time; I’ve found a few things that have helped me plan and achieve more than I could have ever imaged possible a few years ago.

Thing #1: Set aside at least a few hours.

Take a weekend, an early morning or two, or skip a few of your 4 hour netflix binges, if you truly want to have an amazing 2016.

Thing #2: Ditch Resolutions. And Start making GOALS.

Resolutions are hardly more than a dream. As financial expert Dave Ramsey says, “Goals are dreams and visions with work clothes on”.

And make your goals “S.M.A.R.T.: Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Relevant, Time-bound.
Example: I want to lose 20 pounds, by March 31st 2016.

This is a good SMART goal that you can easily work backwards to create a daily, weekly, monthly targets and an action plan to accomplish this goal.

Thing #3: Pick a #1 Focus.

Make sure you have a “Focus Goal”.  It’s the goal that means the most to you, and will help give you momentum to accomplish the rest of your goals.
What’s the one thing that will make MASSIVE change in your life if you accomplish it in 2016?

That’s a big question. That takes some time, and thought, and soul-searching.  That’s why you need the 4+ hour block to dig deep.

Thing #4: WRITE IT DOWN!

A study by Dr. Gail Mathews at the Dominican University in CA found that those who write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them.

That is huge. If you only do one thing on this list, at least do this. Put it on a sticky note in your wallet, write it on a piece of paper on your wall. Anything! This is a must.

In the deeply wise words of Shia Labeouf,
“Just dooo it! Make your dreams come true!”

 

 

 

Thing #5: Create a simple action plan & track your progress.

Don’t overcomplicate it. Pick the one single next action you need to take to make progress towards your goal. Do it. Then, do the next one thing.

Thing #6: Get outside help if you get stuck, or want to speed up your progress.

Hire a coach, find a gym buddy, pick up a killer supplement stack, buy your meals prepared by a local expert [Faith For Fit, FitPantry, MuscleGrub], read a top-ranked book on your goal topic.  Don’t go it alone.
